 Piano Lessons for All Ages

 Earliest Beginners

For the earliest beginners, ages 3-5, Matthew presents rhythmic movement and ear training, skills which are proven to give a head start to young musicians. Clapping, stomping, jumping and dancing make early rhythmic development fun through a whole body approach, while aquiring a sense of pitch and melody is developed through singing and playing-by-listening. At this age, there is less focus on performing, and more focus on developing a musical ear. A mommy or daddy should be present during each lesson, and are encouraged to participate in games and activities. Not available online. In-person lessons only.

 Beginners

For the beginning student, ages 6-10, music is learned through a mastery of positions around the circle of fifths, accompanied by appropriate chords, scales, and exercises as each new key is presented. Detailed notes are taken during every lesson, reviewing material covered and clearly outlining practice objectives for the coming week. Parents are encouraged to be in regular contact with Matthew and are welcomed to be present for lessons. Matthew specializes in NYSSMA preparation for levels 1-6, and strongly encourages school-aged students to participate in NYSSMA evaluations in the spring of each year.

 Intermediate and Advanced

For the continuing student looking for a fresh start with piano instructions, Matthew offers a free assessment of progress and appropriate placement in grade level as dictated by NYSSMA standards. If you have been playing for a few years, and want to take the next step to playing the music you enjoy, Matthew will guide you through the techniques you need to play the style of music you desire. For students aged 11 years and older, access to recording equipment in Matthew's studio is provided at no additional cost, so you can have a professional recording of your playing to show off to your friends and family. For the college-bound student wishing to pursue music professionally, Matthew will guide you through choosing audition material and what to expect at entrance examinations. Intensive work on sight ready, ear training and dictation. Additional help in advanced theory, including species counterpoint, harmony and analysis. Materials provided.
